Ganiba Onsen

Ganiba Onsen 乳頭温泉郷蟹場温泉

An onsen with a popular mixed gender open-air bath surrounded in nature

Nyuto Onsen-kyo is the collective name of 7 hot spring ryokans located on the foot of Mt. Nyuto inside the Towada Hachimantai National Park.

Established in 1846, Ganiba Onsen is a ryokan located in the innermost area of Nyuto Onsen-kyo. Its name means “crab place” which comes from the crabs living in the nearby stream.

Guests with small, palm-size tattoos may use the onsen, but back piece, body suit, and other large size tattoos are not allowed.

The free-flowing onsen is a slightly alkaline simple sulfur spring. It is a colorless spring with a slight viscosity and a soft feel. You can see white sulfuric sediment floating in the hot spring water.

The gender-separate indoor bath features a large bath made from Akita cedar wood, and a small stone bath. It also includes various bathing amenities.

There is also a popular open-air bath called “Karako-no-Yu” which is surrounded in beautiful pristine nature. It is located at the end of 50-meter walkway outside the ryokan. There are gender separate changing rooms, but the bath itself is mixed gender.

You can soak in the large bath surrounded by trees while listening to the sound of a stream. It offers deep relaxation, as if you have become one with nature. But you have to shed your inhibitions as you cannot wear a towel while soaking in the bath.

For ladies, if you don’t have the courage to go in the mixed bath, you should stay overnight in the ryokan instead, as the open-air bath becomes reserved for women from 19:30 to 20:30. You can also use a smaller open-air bath that is exclusive for women.

Akita gets plenty of snow in winter, and admiring the snow scenery while soaking is also popular here. The onsen is located not far from the Tazawako Ski Resort, so it’s also great if you want to enjoy winter sports and hot spring in one trip.

With the rich hot springs and great nature full of charm throughout the seasons, a visit here is sure to refresh your mind and body.
