Hakuba Ryujin Onsen

2-1 Koguriyama Serizawa, Hirosaki-shi, Aomori 白馬龍神温泉

Experience a high quality, mineral-rich natural onsen

This day trip onsen facility is located in the suburbs of Hirosaki, a city famous for cherry blossoms in spring and the Neputa Festival in summer. The place features a mineral-rich natural onsen and 6 spacious private baths which you can enjoy at a cheap cost.

The large communal bath here is a sight to behold. The hot spring water overflows from the tub and its minerals have deposited and hardened into layers over the years, forming a rough texture that resembles the scales of a dragon.

Guests with tattoos are allowed in the bath, as long as proper bathing manners are observed. If you are not familiar with bathing manners in an onsen, make sure to learn it before visiting.

The onsen is a sodium-chloride-sulfate spring that features brown-colored water with a tinge of yellow green. Its appearance may be impactful at first sight, but the pH 7 spring water has a refreshing quality that is gentle on the skin.

However, it is still a mineral-rich spring that flows directly from the source, so it is advisable to avoid long soaks, alternating instead with the fresh water bath. The onsen will warm your body to the core, but will not make you perspire too much after a bath. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids before and after bathing.

One recommended routine to maximize the effects of the onsen is to bathe and rest multiple times over a day. If you buy the set ticket that includes use of the large hall or private room, you can enjoy meals and snacks or even sleep after each bath.

There are also a private baths that include a spacious rest area. They are also equipped with an air conditioner, a TV set, and a toilet, so you can kick back and relax in a private atmosphere.

Guests with reservations are prioritized for the private baths, so make sure to check the reservation list before buying a ticket. It may get crowded at times, so it is better to phone in advance to make a reservation.

Note that there are no bathing amenities in the baths, so you should bring your own or buy them at the reception desk. You can also buy snacks in a shop. You should try the famous Hirosaki apple juice after a bath.

This place is located 10 minutes on foot from Matsukitai Station on the Konan Railway Owani Line. You can also take the Konan Bus going to Koguriyama and get off at the Hirosaki Eigyosho terminal. Just look for the prominent building that looks like a large shrine.
