Higashi Onsen

Iojima, Mishima, Kagoshima District, Kagoshima 東温泉

A secluded natural open-air bath with a magnificent view

Mishima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture consists of 3 inhabited islands: Takeshima, Iojima, and Kuroshima. Iojima, where this onsen is located, is situated between the two other islands.

To access Iojima, you can use the ferry service that departs from Kagoshima harbor 4 times a week (travel time is around 4 hours). You can also fly from Kagoshima Airport on a 1-hour flight in a 3-seater Cessna plane (flies 2 roundtrips a week).

Iojima was formed from a volcanic eruption. It currently has a population of around 100 and is home to around 5 private guest houses. The symbolic peak of Mt. Io constantly spews white smoke, letting islanders feel the great power of the earth. Beneath the ocean around the ferry harbor, hot springs rich in iron flow out, turning the ocean water into a remarkable reddish brown.

There are two natural hot spring baths in the island, both of which were formed from volcanic activity. Higashi Onsen, located 40 to 60 minutes on foot from the harbor, has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 secluded hot springs. You can enjoy a view of the splashing waves and open sea while bathing in this natural bath surrounded by rocky cliffs.

There is an unmanned changing room built from piled up rocks. It is a mixed gender bath, so bathers must wear bathing suits. If you have a large tattoo, please wear a “Rash Guard” and consideration other users.

The onsen is an Alum Sulfur spring with a high level of acidity. There are three bathtubs with slightly differing temperatures, so you can choose the one that is comfortable for you. While the spring water is good for your skin, you should avoid getting it in your eyes as it can cause them to sting.

A relaxing bath here while admiring the magnificent view is sure to be a memorable time, an experience that can only be had in this place.
