Kirishimaya Ryokan

541 Kusatsu, Kusatsu-machi, Agatsuma-gun, Gunma 桐島屋旅館

A long-established onsen ryokan that welcomes visitors from overseas

Despite its location in the midst of nature, this long-established onsen ryokan is conveniently situated 10 minutes on foot from the Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal, and just 3 minutes from the famous “Yubatake” field, the main attraction and symbol of Kusatsu Onsen.

For accommodation plans, you can choose from a no-meals plan or a plan with breakfast. The ryokan has English-speaking staff, and they have been certified a “Gunma Excellence” facility for their service and hospitality to foreign tourists.

In addition to enjoying reasonable accommodation fees, you need not worry about meals as you can visit various restaurants, izakayas, and other food establishments around Yubatake that are open until late at night. You can even ask the staff for local recommendations.

The onsen is a free-flowing spring sourced from the famous waters of Kusatsu Onsen. It is known for corroding metal, so you should remove any rings, necklaces, and other metal accessories before bathing.

The spring water is strongly acidic (pH 2) and has strong germicidal properties. It is also effective in exfoliating your skin. While shampoo and makeup remover can be used, you should avoid soaping and scrubbing your body with a nylon towel as it may damage your skin. You can just rub your skin gently with your hands.

The communal bath area has 3 different indoor baths: a high temperature bath (46-48℃), a mid-temperature bath (42-44℃), and a lukewarm bath. The mid-temperature bath is known as “shiriyaki” (buttock-roasting) since the hot spring flows from the bottom of the tub. Kusatsu Onsen’s water is not suitable for long baths, and a 3-minute soak is more than enough to enjoy its benefits. Beyond the large bath, there is also an open-air bath which is the smallest in all of Kusatsu Onsen.

If you’re hesitant to bathe in public, you can use the free private bath. This bath is also a “shiriyaki” style bath. Lodging guests can use it 24 hours a day without advance reservation. The bath is also equipped with a 3-minute hourglass timer.

The ryokan’s owner will gladly tell you how to bathe properly in Kusatsu Onsen’s unique spring waters. The staff can also explain it in English, so feel free to ask them about it.

Day trip bathers are also welcome. You can even use the private bath without additional fees. The private bath can accommodate up to 2 persons, but you can use it all by yourself if you wish. It’s great for enjoying the famous natural spring in a private atmosphere.
