Oyu Onsen Abe Ryokan

34 Oyasuokuyama-kokuyurin, Minase, Yuzawa-shi, Akita 大湯温泉 阿部旅館

A secluded onsen lodge where you can feel the breath of nature

This onsen lodge with 8 guest rooms is surrounded in rich nature. It is located in the upper reaches of the Minase River, down the road from the Oyasu Gorge, a popular sightseeing spot in Akita Prefecture.

The naturally flowing hot spring here has a source temperature of 98℃. Billows of steam rise up around the lodge, creating a fantastic sight.

The lodge’s interior has a warm, relaxing atmosphere decorated with items of folklore. The shiny, polished floors are heated using the hot spring, making it comfortable whatever the season.

The hot spring baths are located at the end of a long corridor. After entering from the changing area, you will find an indoor bath called “Konjaku-buro”. Beside it is a steam bath that uses steam from the hot spring. There are no shower stalls, so you should pour hot spring water on your body using the “kakeyu” tub before taking a soak.

Go outside from the indoor bath to find an open-air bath made of stone. If you go down the stairs from here, you will find two open-air baths situated along a river with a view of the gorge. One is called “Kajika-buro” and the other is “Seseragi-buro”, and they alternate between men and women depending on the time and season. These baths can also be used by day trip guests.

There is another bath called “Tennenkawa-buro” that is open only from July to September, and is popular with visitors during the summer. It features hot spring water flowing from the riverbed, so the river itself is an open-air bath. You can enjoy a great sense of freedom in a wild location. It is a mixed gender bath, but bathers can wear towels or bathing suits, and both children and adults can enjoy a soak. Note that rental of towels and bathing suits is not available, so you have to bring your own.

In the guest room building, there is an indoor cypress wood bath exclusive for lodging guests. It is replete with amenities, and you can use it anytime, 24 hours a day during your stay.

Lodging guests can enjoy a dinner of homemade dishes featuring ingredients from the Mt. Kurikoma locality, including wild vegetables, mushrooms, and iwana fish. You can also savor their homegrown vegetables and pickled radish known as “gakko”.

Depending on your accommodation plan, you can also enjoy a steak of Minase beef for dinner, or go on a winter-limited therapeutic bath course.

The lodge does not refuse guests with tattoos, but anti-social forces are strictly prohibited. Please observe proper manners and avoid taking actions that may cause any misunderstanding.

To access this place, get off at Yuzawa Station on the the JR Ou Main Line, then take a 1-hour bus ride on the Ugo Kotsu bus, getting off at the last stop called Toritani. If you are driving, exit at the Yuzawa IC on the Akita Expressway, and drive along National Route 398 for around 50 minutes. The place is located at the southern end of Akita, near the border with Miyagi Prefecture.

This is a great place to stay in if you want to enjoy the seasonal sights of the Oyasu Gorge, including the scenic Oyasu Gorge Geyser, also known as “Jigokugama” (pot of hell).
