Rotenburo Mizusawa Onsen

73-15 Tazawako Obonai Shimotakano, Senboku-shi, Akita 露天風呂 水沢温泉

Mysterious hot spring with ice green and milky white

This place is one of the most famous lodges in Mizusawa Onsen, a hot spring district where you can enjoy a mineral-rich free-flowing natural spring.

The lodge has reasonable prices, and accepts both day trip visitors and long-stay guests. It is popular with both locals and visitors from all over Japan, and has a homely atmosphere that lets you relax whether you’re a solo or group traveler.

Guest with palm-size tattoos or smaller may use the onsen bath. Just remember to observe proper manners while bathing or when using the communal areas.

The hot spring is rich in metasilicic acid, a natural skin moisturizer. It has a characteristic milky white color with a mysterious tinge of ice green.

The bath area features an indoor bath and an open-air bath, both of which are quite spacious. The open-air bath has a depth of around 1 meter, so you can easily soak your entire body and relax while enjoying the surrounding scenery.

The indoor bath area has two bath tubs with different temperatures, as well as a cascading stream. The hot spring source has a flow volume of 1,000 liters per minute, continuously filling the tubs with fresh spring water.

The mineral-rich onsen is a sulfur-containing calcium-magnesium-sodium sulfate-chloride spring. The scent of sulfur permeates the air here. You will feel your skin become moisturized after a bath.

Accommodation is basically without meals, but you can cook your own food in a kitchen that is equipped with cooking utensils and tableware. You just have to bring your own ingredients, seasonings, and cutlery.

The guest rooms have a simple design but are bright and clean. Note that you have to bring your own amenities such as towels, toothbrush, and tissue. The lodge is self-service, so you have to bring out the futon on your own.

There is also a washing machine and dryer that you can use for free. This place lets you experience a traditional therapeutic hot spring stay but with the added convenience of modern technology.

If you are coming from Tokyo, you can take a 3-hour ride on the Komachi Shinkansen, getting off at JR Tazawako Station. From there, you can take a 25-minute ride on the bus going to Nyuto/Kogen, getting off at the Mizusawa Onsen bus stop. There is also an express bus going from Tokyo or Yokohama to the Tazawako terminal.
