Ryokan Sanga

6961-1 Manganji Minamioguni, Aso-gun, Kumamoto 黒川温泉 旅館 山河

A secluded ryokan surrounded by a deep forest in Kurokawa Onsen

This traditional Japanese ryokan is located in a secluded part of Kurokawa Onsen, one of the most famous hot spring districts in Kumamoto Prefecture. It is situated on the edge of a vast forest, around 5 minutes away by car from the central Kurokawa Onsen area.

The spacious site features 7 different kinds of baths, including open-air baths, indoor baths, and private baths. You can enjoy walking through the lush greenery of the trees as you visit the different baths in the ryokan.

The onsen has two hot spring sources, both of which are free-flowing. One of them is called “Yakushi-no-yu” and is a brown-colored simple sulfur spring. The other is called “Bihada-no-yu” and is a sodium chloride-hydrogencarbonate-sulfate spring.

Yakushi-no-yu exfoliates your skin and washes away oil while warming your body to the core. Bihada-no-yu has a gentle quality that leaves your skin smooth. Take a bath in both springs to moisturize your skin and maximize their beautifying effects.

There is a mixed outdoor bath and a female-only outdoor bath, both offering a unique, rustic atmosphere with a view of dynamic scenery. The large size of the baths provides a sense of freedom, and the fresh breeze and the sound of the trickling water add to a truly refreshing experience.

There are also gender-separate indoor communal baths: a stone bath for men and a hinoki wood bath for women. The water in these baths are mixed from the two hot spring sources. You can soak in the brown-colored waters that exude a slight scent of sulfur in the air.

There are also three rental private baths for those who prefer to take a leisurely bath in privacy. Rental is free, and you just have to make a reservation at the front desk, from which you will borrow a key when your scheduled time comes.

The ryokan has 16 guest rooms in total, with 9 standard rooms and 7 rooms with an attached onsen bath. Stay in one of the 7 rooms if you want to bathe in the hot spring waters as much as you want at any time of the day.

For meals, you can enjoy kaiseki course dinners that include Akaushi beef(Premium Wagyu), basashi(horse meat), wild vegetables, and other Aso local specialties. If you make a reservation at least 1 week in advance, you can choose to have a “macrobiotic kaiseki” that does not include any animal products or artificial seasonings.

This ryokan is the perfect place to spend a relaxing time away from the bustle of daily life, surrounded by beautiful nature that changes across the seasons.
