Sakamoto Onsen

Iojima, Mishima, Kagoshima District, Kagoshima 坂本温泉

A natural open-air bath loved by the locals

Mishima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture consists of 3 inhabited islands: Takeshima, Iojima, and Kuroshima. Iojima, where this onsen is located, is situated between the two other islands.

To access Iojima, you can use the ferry service that departs from Kagoshima harbor 4 times a week (travel time is around 4 hours). You can also fly from Kagoshima Airport on a 1-hour flight in a 3-seater Cessna plane (flies 2 roundtrips a week).

Iojima was formed from a volcanic eruption. It currently has a population of around 100 and is home to around 5 private guest houses. The symbolic peak of Mt. Io constantly spews white smoke, letting islanders feel the great power of the earth. Beneath the ocean around the ferry harbor, hot springs rich in iron flow out, turning the ocean water into a remarkable reddish brown.

There are two natural hot spring baths in the island, both of which were formed from volcanic activity. Sakamoto Onsen is located on the northern coast of the island, on the opposite side of the harbor. Locals love the place despite its distance from the village.

The specific time when it can be used for bathing depends on the tides. The spring source has a high temperature, but it becomes suitable for bathing when it mixes with the cold seawater. At low tide, it’s a hot spring bath, becoming a warm swimming pool at high tide. Bathers need to watch their step as the rock floor can become slippery due to algae.

It is a mixed gender bath, so bathers must wear bathing suits. If you have a large tattoo, please wear a “Rash Guard” and consideration other users.

Besides the onsen, Iojima island is full of unique sights and lively experiences. You might see wild peacocks calmly walking around the idyllic scenery. You can also take part in the Mendon, an old local festival that has been designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

While staying on the island full of vitality, please enjoy the precious experience that you can only experience here!
