Sand Bath Hall SARAKU

Experience the famous natural sand bath of Ibusuki Onsen

Located in the southeastern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, Ibusuki City is one of the most famous for hot spring areas in Kagoshima Prefecture. This facility is a place where you can experience the famous sand baths of Ibusuki. With its convenient location close to hotels in the city, it has become a popular place for both local and foreign tourists.

The sand baths have been used by people for its healing effects for over 300 years. It is a rare kind of bath where you bury your body in the sand that has been heated by the steam of a natural hot spring. Research has found that the health effects of the sand bath are 3 to 4 times greater than that of a regular hot spring bath.

Guests with tattoos can use the sand baths, but are not allowed in the communal bath and sauna. If you want to wash off the sand from your body after a sand bath, you can use one of the private shower stalls. Just register in advance at the reception area before going out for the sand bath.

During the sand bath, you will need a face towel to keep the sand away from your face. You can bring one on your own, or buy the “Sand bath commemorative towel” available at the reception area. It also makes for a great souvenir.

After paying the fee, you will receive a yukata which you will change into in the dressing room. Note that you should not wear any underwear or swimsuit under the yukata as they may prevent your body from sweating properly. After changing into the yukata, go out into the beach with your towel.

As you lie down in the hot sand, you can enjoy the sea breeze and the sound of the breaking waves. The heat and pressure from the sand helps improve your circulation. You will gradually feel your body get warm and sweaty all over. Typical bath time in the sand is around 10 minutes.

After getting buried in the sand, if you feel that any part of your body is getting too hot, lift it out immediately from the sand. If you still feel hot, please inform the attendant. Do not try to endure the heat if it is uncomfortable as this may cause low-temperature burns or hot flashes.

Since your body will sweat profusely, you will feel refreshed after the sand bath. It’s a rare experience you can find only in Ibusuki. If you feel that a shower is not enough and you want to soak in an onsen, you should visit the Ibusuki Motoyu Onsen located nearby.
