Tohoku Onsen

〒039-2661 青森県上北郡東北町字上笹橋21−18 東北温泉

Moisturize your skin in the darkest moor hot springs in Japan

This onsen facility frequented by the locals also includes accommodation with 6 guest rooms. It is conveniently located close to National Route 384, and is accessible 35 minutes by car from Misawa Airport, or 7 minutes on foot from Ottomo Station on the Aoimori Railway.

Rather than being a ryokan that accepts day trip visitors, it is a day trip onsen facility with an attached lodge, a common style in Aomori Prefecture. You can thoroughly enjoy the hot springs for reasonable fees.

The onsen here is a free-flowing moor hot spring, and is known as the darkest moor hot spring in Japan. Moor hot springs are a rare type of spring with a cola-like color, formed when groundwater passes through plant matter that has accumulated in the ground through many years.

The slightly alkaline simple spring is rich in rare plant-based organic matter, which helps moisturize dry skin. It has been called a “hot spring for beauty”.

The natural spring water flows continuously without heating, adding water, disinfection, or recirculation. It has a slippery feel and is effective at exfoliating your skin.

The communal bath area features a variety of bath tubs as well as a sauna. There is a cold water bath that is filled with natural spring water. Use it in alternate with the hot spring baths to keep yourself warm and regulate your body temperature.

If you want to enjoy the onsen more than once, you should get the one-day ticket that lets you bathe as much as you want for a day. If you prefer bathing in private, you can use the private bath and enjoy the rich moor hot spring all to yourself.

Shampoo and other amenities are not available in the bath. If you are a day trip visitor, you should bring your own amenities or buy them at the vending machine inside the facility.

Meals for lodging guests are Japanese set meals made with local Aomori ingredients. A popular meal plan is the “kuro-zukushi ozen” which feature plenty of “black” ingredients including kurobuta pork katsu, kuro-dofu, boiled kuro-garei fish, kuro-ninniku garlic, and kuro-konnyaku.

Day trip bathing is open from 5:30 AM to 10:30 PM, and the fee is only 300 yen. It’s a convenient rest stop if you are camping in the Lake Ogawara area.
