Tonosama Yu

1408-27 Nishikata, Ibusuki, Kagoshima 二月田温泉 殿様湯

Take a bath! Drinking the wate! Historic famous hot spring

This communal bath house is located in a quiet residential area, around 10 minutes on foot from the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line Nigatsuden Station.

Historically, this place was frequented by a feudal lord (called “tonosama” in Japanese), hence its name. The remnants of the original bath tub is exhibited in a monument behind the bath house.

The simply-designed interior features a changing area with just a shelf, and a bath area with just one central tub. The tub is decorated with the emblem of the Shimazu samurai clan. Generations of Shimazu clan lords loved bathing in this place.

The onsen is a sodium chloride spring with a slightly murky, bluish color. It flows directly from the source without added water, heat, chlorination, or recirculation. Even just a short soak will keep your body warm for long periods.

Rental towels and amenities are not available, so you need to bring your own. The wash stalls are not equipped with showers, so make sure to pour spring water on your body before entering the bath. It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the rules of Ibusuki Onsen.

The facility also has a place to drink the spring water. A TV program that featured this place asserted that the spring water is “better for drinking than for bathing”. Why not try a taste yourself?
