Tsurumaru Onsen

622-5 Tsurumaru, Yusui, Aira-gun, Kagoshima, Casual guesthouse鶴丸温泉

One of the leading Moor Onsen in Japan

This onsen ryokan was established over 50 years ago, and is located less than a minute on foot from the unmanned Tsurumaru Station on the Kitto Line.

The onsen here is a rare moor hot spring with one of the richest and highest qualities in Japan. It is popular with both locals and onsen enthusiasts all over the country.

Moor hot springs contain organic substances derived from plant matter buried deep in the ground. Compared to other moor springs, the coffee-colored water here is richer, and it has been called a “hot spring for beauty”.

The onsen is a sodium hydrogencarbonate spring that exfoliates your skin and cleanses your pores. The organic substances in the moor spring with smooth silky texture similar to moisturizer.

The communal bath area plays jazz music in the background, and features two bath tubs. The deep one is “hot bath” and the shallow one is “lukewarm bath”. There is a step in the shallow bathtub, so it is suitable for half-body bathing.

The ryokan’s proprietary hot spring source has a temperature of 63℃, but you can adjust the bath temperature if you wish by adding cold water from a faucet. The spring water is potable, and you can drink it using a cup placed near the spring spout.

It’s a bit easy to miss, but there’s a low door on the wall of the indoor bath area. Crouch down and enter the door to get to a roofed open-air bath. The spring water here is pumped straight from the source without added water. You can enjoy the mellow fragrance and viscous quality of the spring, and you’ll notice your skin get smooth as soon as you enter the bath.

The morning hours can get a bit crowded with local patrons, but it gets quieter and more relaxing by midday. While a day trip bath is more than enough to experience the excellent moor hot spring, with reasonable lodging fees, why not stay overnight and enjoy it day and night?

For meals, you can enjoy local cuisine made from local ingredients. Even a 1-week long stay will cost just 35,000 yen per person, so it’s also suitable for onsen therapy trips.
