3006−2 Nishizato, Oguni-machi, Aso-gun, Kumamoto わいた山荘 和風オーベルジュ 山荘わいた

A place to enjoy a mystical onsen, beautiful nature, and delicious food

This small onsen lodge is operated by a husband-and-wife team. It is located at the foot of Mt. Waita, also known as Oguni Fuji, which straddles the border of Kumamoto and Oita.

The lodge can accommodate up to 5 groups per day. Besides the standard Japanese-style guest rooms, there is also one separate cottage with an attached indoor and open-air bath, offering a quiet, relaxing atmosphere.

The lodge also has 4 private baths which lodging guests can use for free as much they want without reservations. When using a bath, flip the placard outside to “Occupied”, then return it to its original position after you finish.

All of the baths are pumped with a free-flowing hot spring. You can enjoy a luxurious bath in a private atmosphere without worrying about others. However, if you have tattoos, make sure not to expose them when visiting the communal areas of the lodge.

The milky spring water is said to mystically change its color depending on the day. It is rich in metasilicic acid which help moisturize your skin, leading it to be called a “hot spring for beauty”.

The “Tenku-no-yu” open-air bath on the top floor offers a great view of the sky and the surrounding mountains, making it the most popular of the private baths here. The wide open view gives you a unique sense of freedom.

The “Chikurin-no-yu” open-air bath is surrounded by a green bamboo forest, creating a fantastic contrast with the bluish, milky white spring water. The woods are lighted up at night, adding to the bath’s relaxing atmosphere.

The “Sasan-yu” semi-open-air bath and the “Waitan-yu” indoor bath have beautiful cobalt blue spring waters. They are also replete with amenities and shower stalls, so you can enjoy a bath regardless of the weather outside.

For dinner, you can enjoy French dishes created with a Japanese taste, made using fresh seasonal ingredients from Oguni Town and Kumamoto. The sweets, sauces, and dressings are all made from scratch, and they will please both your eyes and your palate. They also serve a popular French toast for breakfast.

This is a place of rich nature with crisp air and clear water. In June, you might get to see fireflies flying elegantly at night. It’s perfect for escaping the busy city life and relaxing your mind and body.

Since this lodge is geared towards adults, children aged 12 and below are not accepted. Note that multilingual service is not available, so if you don’t speak Japanese, make sure you come with someone who does.
