Wakihama kyodoyokujo Otasshanyu

Obamacho Minamihonmachi, Unzen, Nagasaki 脇浜温泉浴場

A communal bath loved by the locals

Located in a residential area some distance away from the Obama Onsen ryokan district, this communal bath house is a little-known to tourists spot that has become an important part of the local community.

It was established in 1937, and is built on an old wooden building with a retro but refined atmosphere, and an appearance that attests to its long history.

As you enter the gender-separate entrance, you will be greeted with the nostalgic sight of a traditional “bandai” reception counter as well as wooden lockers and signboards that have survived through the years.

The bath area features a central tub separated into two compartments, and 4 simple wash stalls on the wall. The high-temperature sodium chloride spring which is unique to Obama-onsen is poured into the bathtub, and regular customers add water according to their taste and keep it at the right temperature.

The hot spring poured into the bathtub is high temperature, so I will tell you the recommended bathing method.

First, before soaking in the bathtub, pouring hot spring on yourself from your body parts such as hands and feet which are far from your heart.

Then, your body fits to the temperature of the hot spring. After that, if you take a bath several times for a short time, you will get warm from the core of your body.

The hot spring here is not suitable for a long bath, but it warms you up well just by soaking quickly, and it is a hot spring with a nice touch to the skin.

Because it is a traditional public bath system, so you need to bring own amenities and towel. When you pay the bathing fee, please be sure to bring small change so as not to have change.

Note that the lockers do not have locks, so care must be taken for your valuables. Be careful also not to touch the spring water spout as it can be extremely hot.

This popular bath house is a place where time seems to have stood still, and it offers visitors a truly nostalgic bathing experience.
