Yachi Onsen

1 Horyo Yachi, Towada-shi, Aomori 谷地温泉

Experience one of the three great hidden hot springs of Japan in a secluded onsen lodge

Located at an altitude of 780 meters in the depths of the Hakkoda mountains, this onsen lodge has a hot spring with a history of over 400 years. It has been called one of the three great hidden hot springs of Japan, and it accommodates both lodging and day trip guests.

The lodge has the appearance of a rustic mountain hut, and the atmosphere of a traditional hot spring sanatorium. It is surrounded by the Yachi Marsh that teems with various alpine plants. Take a deep breath to taste the clean and crisp air in this place.

The onsen features two baths called “Kami-no-Yu” and “Shimo-no-Yu”, each one using a distinct hot spring source. Kami-no-Yu is a sulfur spring with milky white waters and a temperature of 42℃, while Shimo-no-Yu is a simple spring with a mild quality and a temperature of 38℃.

Shimo-no-Yu is normally a men’s bath, and features spring water that emerges from the bottom of the bath. It has become a popular bath for onsen fans in the country. The two baths change for men and women for a 3-hour period from 17:30 to 20:30, so ladies should take the opportunity to enjoy the fresh, natural spring water of Shimo-no-Yu.

A recommended bathing routine is to soak in the relatively lukewarm Shimo-no-Yu for around 30 minutes, then bathe for around 5 to 10 minutes in the hotter Kami-no-Yu, before repeating the process. Take your time alternating between the two baths to fully refresh and rejuvenate your body.

The spring water in both baths has a slightly viscous but soft quality that allows you to soak comfortably for long periods. You won’t feel exhausted even if you take long, leisurely baths here.

For dinner, you can savor Aomori specialty dishes made with local ingredients. The hearty dishes include Iwana fish raised in clear spring waters, wild vegetables and mushrooms, as well as meat dishes. You can also enjoy their lineup of local sake delivered directly from the breweries.

Lodging guests can bathe in the onsen all night until the 9:00 AM cleaning time. The faucets in the lodge flow with the natural spring water of the Hakkoda mountains, and the hot spring water itself is drinkable. Try it to refresh your body both inside and out.

To access this place, you can take a bus from JR Aomori Station or Hakkoda Station, or make use of the free shuttle bus that operates once a day. Note that the boarding point for the shuttle bus may change depending on the season, so please inquire in advance. The onsen is well worth the long travel time required to get there.
