Yunotsu Onsen Motoyu Senyakuto

Ro-208-1 Yunotsuchō Yunotsu, Oda, Shimane 温泉津(ゆのつ)温泉元湯

A place to experience the power of hot springs

This facility is located in Yunotsu-onsen, the first hot spring district in Japan to be registered as part of a World Heritage site. It is a communal bath house with a history of over 1,300 years.

Yunotsu Onsen is one of the most famous areas in Japan for hot spring therapy, and it retains the look and feel of a traditional Japanese town. You can especially feel this atmosphere in Motoyu, which is loved by both locals and onsen enthusiasts all over the country.

The hot spring water in Motoyu flows from the ground into the baths naturally and continuously without the use of pumps, so you get to experience the real, untouched power of the hot spring directly.

The sodium-calcium-chloride spring has a murky brownish green color with a rich and balanced mineral content that includes sodium, iron, and calcium. These minerals have deposited around the bath tub throughout the years, creating the appearance of small stalactites.

There is just one gender-separate indoor bath, and it features three different bath types: a hot bath, a warm bath, and a sitting bath. Note that the hot spring source temperature is a piping hot 50℃, and the water in the warm bath is still a fairly high 45℃. A common way to bathe here is to first pour hot water on your body, enter the warm bath for 1-2 minutes, take a rest, then repeat the process.

Only after your body is sufficiently warmed up should you challenge yourself to enter the hot bath. Many regulars find this bath too hot no matter how many times they try it, so you’ll surely be regarded as a master if you can endure its scalding waters.

This powerful onsen can keep your body warm for long periods even after just a short bath. You can also try the drinkable spring water which can help you get well or maintain your health.
